Blood Music is about my grandpa Earl and his son Charles Merrick. They were travelling musicians, just like me, so I guess doing whatever jobs need to be done to survive alongside playing music late into the night for various groups of strangers is in my blood.
My grandpa used to play the bars in the backroads of Louisiana, in the segregated south. His son Charles went on to be known as Rockie Charles, The President of Soul. I used to listen to him play on the screened-in front porch of our shotgun house in Hahnville, Louisiana, but I didn’t know about his career in music, to me, he was just Uncle Charles.
I guess this particular song is a tribute to all I’ve known and lost and gained through music.
